Found this note in one of my grocery bags when I got home. If you think discrimination only applies to race, gender, or ethnicity then you are sorely mistaken. My child is 6 years old. He’s a male. He’s white. He has autism. And today he was unfairly judged by a total stranger because he was making fire alarm noises in the grocery store. He wasn’t screaming, crying, or throwing a fit, he was simply making noise to drowned out the noise around him. It’s a coping mechanism and it’s his “stim” (stimming is self regulating behavior most prevalent in children with autism). I’ve learned to tune it out and while I fully realize other people haven’t, by telling him NOT to do it is ripping away his safety net and stripping him of his ability to cope. I don’t hate the person who left this note. Lord knows there are days I have trouble with the constant noise level too. I get it, I really do. Ignorance and discrimination are not just race based, gender based, or ethnically based they are HUMAN based and they are TAUGHT behaviors. While I can’t teach my son not to be autistic, I can, I will, and I am teaching him to live with an open mind and an open heart and I don’t care how LOUDLY he does it! ❤️
